Thierry Mugler FW 1998–99 Press Portfolio Plates — Helmut Newton

This entry documents an original press portfolio produced for the Thierry Mugler Fall–Winter 1998–99 Prêt-à-Porter Lingerie campaign, photographed in Monaco by Helmut Newton. The original folder is printed with the title “Collection Automne – Hiver 98/99 par Helmut Newton,” identifying its function within the season’s official press communication materials. The project features models Brigitta Bungard and Michelle Rozmarin and belongs to Mugler’s late-1990s editorial distribution system, where printed portfolios were used as primary media tools for fashion press circulation.

The set contains 9 individual black-and-white photographic plates, printed on heavy, high-quality photographic paper and presented in the original folder. Issued as press material, it was intended for industry distribution rather than commercial sale or public retail circulation.

The portfolio remains complete, with all plates present and well preserved. The folder is in very good condition, showing only minimal signs of age consistent with careful storage. The interior left panel presents a very light tonal transfer, consistent with contact between printed surfaces over time. The plates themselves remain clean and structurally stable.

The format follows standard press portfolio production practices of the period, with folder dimensions of 20.8 × 30.8 cm and plates measuring 20 × 30 cm.

A scarce surviving example of late-1990s fashion press material, representative of a pre-digital communication system in which printed portfolios served as primary vehicles for editorial and brand distribution.
